为龙胆科植物瘤毛獐牙菜的干燥全草，始载于《内蒙古中草药》，夏、秋季采收，洗净泥土，晒干或阴干，切段备用。主产于中国、朝鲜、俄罗斯，国内广泛见于北方各省。

据《高原中草药治疗手册》记载：“清湿热，健胃；主湿热黄疸，胁痛，痢疾腹痛，食欲不振。”
当药性状
【性味】 味苦，性寒。
【归经】 归肝，胃，大肠经。
根呈圆锥形，长2－7厘米，黄色或黄褐色，断面类白色。茎方柱形，多分枝，直径1—2.5毫米；黄绿色或黄棕色带紫色，节处略膨大；质脆，易折断，断面中空。叶对生，无柄；完整叶片展平后呈条状披针形。先端渐尖，基部狭，全缘。花冠蓝紫色或暗黄色，5深裂，裂片内侧基部有2腺体。蒴果卵状矩形。气微，味苦。以花多、味苦者为佳。
