为百合科植物麦冬或沿阶草的干燥块根，夏季采挖，洗净，反复暴晒、堆置，至七八成干，除去须根，干燥。《神农本草经》记载：“主心腹结气，伤中伤饱，胃络脉绝，羸瘦短气。”
麦冬各家论述
《本经疏证》记载：“麦门冬，下焦实证，非见手掌烦热，唇口干燥，不可用也。上气因于风，因于痰，不因于火，咽喉不利者不可用也。虚羸气少，不气逆欲吐，反下利者，不可用也。脉非结代，微而不欲绝者，不可用也。”

【性味】 味甘，微苦，性微寒。
【归经】 归心、肺、胃经。
呈纺锤形，两端略尖，表面黄白色或淡黄色，有细纵纹。质柔韧，断面黄白色，半透明，中柱细小。气微香，味甘、微苦。
