南烛叶叫乌饭树，又名南烛，古称染菽；为杜鹃花科植物乌饭树的叶，8～9月采收，拣净小枝及杂质，晒干。
喜生于丘陵地带或海拔400-1400m的山地，常见于山坡林内或灌木丛中。
南烛叶各家论述
据《本草经疏》记载：“南烛，《本经》言其味苦气平，性无毒，然尝其味亦多带微涩，其气平者，平即凉也。
《十剂》云，涩可去脱，非其味带涩，则不能止泄，非其气本凉，则不能变白。
发者，血之余也，颜色者，血之华也，血热则鬓发早白而颜枯槁；脾弱则困倦嗜卧而气力不长；肾虚则筋骨软弱而行步不前。
入心凉血，入脾益气，入肾添精，其云却老，非虚语矣。凡变白之药，多是气味苦寒，有妨脾胃，惟南烛气味和平，兼能益脾。
南烛同旱莲草、没食子、地黄、桑根、枸杞、山茱萸、何首乌、白蒺藜，为乌须发之圣药，气味和平，性复无毒。除变白外，无他用。”

【性味】 味酸，涩，性平。
【归经】 归心，脾，肾经。
干燥叶呈长椭圆形至披针形，两端尖锐，边缘有疏细锯齿，多向外反卷，革质而有光泽，
上面暗棕色，主脉凹陷，下面棕色，主脉及侧脉均显着凸出，叶有短柄，多向后弯曲；质脆。气弱，味涩而苦.
