为冬青科植物铁冬青的树皮或根皮。全年均可采，鲜用或晒干。常生长于山下疏林或沟、溪边。
喜温暖湿润的气候。喜光照，稍耐寒。对土壤要求不严，以上层深厚而肥沃的砂质壤土上栽培为宜。
生于海拔400-1100米的山坡常绿阔叶林中和林缘。

据《福建药物志》记载：“清热利湿，消肿止痛，祛风解暑；主胃痛，中暑腹痛，痢疾。”
救必应性状
【性味】 味苦；性寒
【归经】 归肺、肝、大肠经
根皮呈卷筒状或略卷曲的板片状，外表面灰黄色或灰褐色，粗糙，常有横皱纹或略横向突起；内表面淡褐色或棕褐色，有浅纵向条纹，质硬而脆，断面略平坦，稍呈颗粒性，黄白色或淡黄褐色，气微，味苦、微涩。树皮较薄，边缘略向内卷，外表面有较多椭圆状突起的皮孔。
