牛膝概述
牛膝为苋科植物牛膝的根，冬季茎叶枯萎时采挖，除去须根及泥沙，捆成小把，晒至干皱后，将顶端切齐，晒干。生于屋旁、林缘、山坡草丛中。分布于除东北以外的全国广大地区。在有些地区则大量栽培，河南产的怀牛膝为地道药材。
牛膝各家论述
《本草经疏》：“牛膝，走而能补，性善下行，故入肝肾。主寒湿痿痹，四肢拘挛、膝痛不可屈伸者，肝脾肾虚，则寒湿之邪客之而成痹，及病四肢拘挛，膝痛不可屈伸。此药性走而下行，其能逐寒湿而除痹也必矣。盖补肝则筋舒，下行则理膝，行血则痛止。逐血气，犹云能通气滞血凝也。”
牛膝性状
【性味】 味苦，酸，性平
【归经】 归肝，肾经
呈细长圆柱形，稍弯曲，上端稍粗，下端较细，表面灰黄色或淡棕色，有略扭曲而细微的纵皱纹、横长皮孔及稀疏的细根痕。质硬而脆，易折断，受潮则变柔软，断面平坦，黄棕色，微呈角质样而油润，中心维管束木部较大，黄白色，其外围散有多数点状的维管束，排列成2～4轮。气微，味微甜而稍苦涩。
