丹参为唇形科植物丹参的根，丹参喜欢在气候温和，光照充足，空气湿润的环境下生长，年平均气温为17.1℃，平均相对湿度为77%的地区是最优良的种植区。
丹参在肥沃的沙质壤土中生长较好，但对土壤酸碱度适应性较广，中性、微酸、微碱均可生长。春、秋二季采挖，除去泥沙，干燥。

《本经逢原》记载：“丹参《本经》治心腹邪气，肠鸣幽幽如走水等疾，皆瘀血内滞而化为水之候。止烦满益气者，瘀积去而烦满愈，正气复也。”
丹参性状
【性味】 味苦，性微寒
【归经】 归心，心包，肝经
干燥根茎顶部常有茎基残余，根略呈长圆柱形，微弯曲，有时分支，其上生多数细须根，表面棕红色至砖红色，粗糙，具不规则的纵皱或栓皮，多呈鳞片状剥落；质坚脆，易折断，断面不平坦，带角质或纤维性，皮部色较深，呈紫黑色或砖红色，木部维管束灰黄色或黄白色，放射状排列。气弱，味甘微苦。
