红药子为蓼科植物毛脉蓼的块根入药，生于山坡、路边、滩地或乱石石中，于秋季采挖，除去茎叶及须根，洗净切片晒干。
红药子各家论述
南药《中草药学》记载：“降火凉血，活血止血。”
红药子性状
【性味】 味苦，微涩，性凉。
【归经】 归肺，大肠，肝经。
块根呈不规则块状，或略呈圆柱形，长8-15cm，或更长，直径3-7cm，表面棕黄色，根头部有多数茎基呈疙瘩状；质极坚硬，难折断，剖面深黄色；木质深浅黄色呈环状，近髓部另有分散的浅黄色木质部束。气微，味苦。
