为氢氧化物类矿物褐铁矿的一种矿石，采挖后去净杂石即可。

据《本草汇言》记载：“禹余粮，养肺金，固大肠之药也。凡属水土不和，清浊混乱诸疾，用之奏效。”
禹余粮性状
【性味】 味甘、涩，性微寒。
【归经】 归胃、大肠经。
呈不规则的斜方块状，表面红棕色、灰棕色或浅棕色，多凹凸不平或附有黄色粉末，断面多显深棕色与淡棕色或浅黄色相间的层纹，各层硬度不同，质松部分指甲可划动；体重，质硬。无臭，无味，嚼之无砂粒感。
