The ripe seed of annual trailing herbaceous plants of Pharbitis nil (L.) Choisy or P. purpurea (L.) Voigt of family Convolvulaceae.

为旋花科植物裂叶牵牛或圆叶牵牛的干燥成熟种子，秋末果实成熟、果壳未开裂时采割植株，晒干，打下种子，除去杂质。生于山野灌丛中、村边、路旁；喜气候温和、光照充足、通风适度，不怕高温酷暑。《纲目》记载：“逐痰消饮，通大肠气秘风秘，杀虫。”

《本草正义》记载：“牵牛，善泄湿热，通利水道，亦走大便，故《别录》谓其苦寒，至李氏东垣，以其兼有辛莶气味，遂谓是辛热雄烈。”
牵牛子性状
【性味】 味苦、性寒，有毒。
【归经】 归肺、肾、大肠经。
呈三棱形，形似橘瓣状，表面灰黑色（黑牵牛子）或淡黄白色（白牵牛子），种皮坚韧，背面有一纵沟，味辛苦，有麻舌感。
