为锦葵科植物草棉、陆地棉、海岛棉和树绵的根或根皮，秋季采挖，洗净，切片，晒干；或剥取根皮，切段，晒干。
棉花根各家论述
《全国中草药汇编》记载：“止咳平喘，痛经止痛。主咳嗽，气喘，月经不调，崩漏。”
棉花根性状
【性味】 味甘，性温。
【归经】 归肺，脾，肝经。
根呈圆柱形，稍弯曲，长10-20cm，直径0.4-2cm。表面黄棕色，有不规则的纵皱纹及横裂的皮孔，皮部薄，红棕色，易剥离。质硬，折断面纤维性，黄白色，无臭，味淡。
