玉竹概述
为百合科植物玉竹的干燥根茎，秋季采挖，除去须根，洗净，晒至柔软后，反复揉搓、晾晒至无硬心，晒干；或蒸透后，揉至半透明，晒干。《玉本草经集注》云“茎干强直，似竹箭杆，有节。”故有玉竹之名。
玉竹各家论述
《本草便读》记载：“玉竹，质润之品，培养肺脾之阴，是其所长，而搜风散热诸治，似非质润味甘之物可取效也。
如风热风温之属虚者，亦可用之。考玉竹之性味、功用，与黄精相似，自能推想，以风温风热之证，最易伤阴，而养阴之药，又易碍邪，唯玉竹甘平滋润，虽补而不碍邪，故古人立方有取乎此也。”
玉竹性状
【性味】 味甘，性微寒。
【归经】 归肺、胃经。
呈长圆柱形，略扁，少有分枝，表面黄白色或淡黄棕色，半透明，具纵皱纹及微隆起的环节，有白色圆点状的须根痕和圆盘状茎痕。质硬而脆或稍软，易折断，断面角质样或显颗粒性。气微，味甘，嚼之发黏。
