沉香，是一种药材名，为瑞香科沉香属沉香、白木香含树脂的木材。木材与树脂，可供细工用材及熏香料。
其黑色芳香，脂膏凝结为块，入水能沉，故称“沉香” ，又名“沉水香”，“水沉香”，古语写作“沈香”（沈，同沉）。
古来常说的“沉檀龙麝”之“沉”，就是指沉香。沉香香品高雅，而且十分难得，自古以来即被列为众香之首。
沉香种类多样而珍贵，是供佛修持的最佳圣品。

据《本草通玄》记载：“沉香，温而不燥，行而不泄，扶脾而运行不倦，达肾而导火归元，有降气之功，无破气之害，实为良品。”
沉香性状
【性味】 味辛、苦，性微温
【归经】 归脾、胃、肾经
呈不规则的棒状、片状或盔帽状。表面褐色，常有黑色、黄色交错的纹理，稍具光泽。入水下沉、半沉水或浮水。质坚实，难折断，破开面灰褐色。有特殊香气，味苦。燃烧时有油渗出，香气较白木香浓烈。
